Lesson Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will know how to enhance their drone footage through basic editing techniques in both photos and videos—using contrast, color, and cropping to create professional-grade results.
Lesson Overview:
Shooting from the sky gives you an incredible perspective. But raw footage often looks flat or dull straight from the camera. This lesson shows you how to bring your shots to life using simple yet powerful editing techniques—even if you're a beginner.
We'll cover basic photo and video editing tips, recommended tools, and an easy workflow.
LESSON
Part 1: Photo Editing Tips (Using Lightroom, Luminar, or Snapseed)
1. Straighten and Crop First
- Fix crooked horizons and reframe using the rule of thirds
- Crop out distractions and enhance subject focus
2. Adjust Exposure and Contrast
- Use exposure to brighten or darken
- Use contrast to separate highlights and shadows
3. Boost Colors Carefully
- Slightly increase vibrance (not saturation)
- Use HSL (Hue/Saturation/Luminance) sliders to enhance specific colors like greens or blues in landscapes
4. Sharpen & Add Texture
- Use subtle sharpening and clarity for details in buildings or landscapes
- Avoid overdoing it—it can create noise
5. Add a Vignette
- Darken edges to draw focus to the center of the image
- Works well for subject isolation
Part 2: Video Editing Tips (Using Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, or CapCut)
1. Trim the Fat
- Cut out slow, shaky, or unnecessary sections
- Aim for short, intentional clips (3–10 seconds each)
2. Stabilize Your Footage
- Use software stabilization if needed—but sparingly
- DJI footage is already fairly smooth if flown well
3. Color Grade for Mood
- Start with a basic correction (white balance, contrast, shadows)
- Then add a cinematic LUT (Look-Up Table) for mood
- Pro Tip: Shoot in D-Cinelike or D-Log for flexible grading
4. Use Music for Energy
- Choose royalty-free tracks that match the vibe (calm, epic, upbeat)
- Cut clips to the beat or rhythm for smooth pacing
5. Add Motion: Zoom, Pan, Tilt
- Simulate gimbal movement in post using keyframes
- This adds energy to still shots or enhances a slow flyby
Lesson Activity: Edit Your Favorite Clip or Photo
Choose your favorite drone shot and:
- Straighten and crop it
- Adjust exposure, contrast, and color
- Add one creative enhancement (vignette, LUT, simulated movement)
Then export and compare it to the original.
Recommended Free/Low-Cost Tools
Key Takeaways:
- Editing brings out the full beauty of your drone shots.
- Small changes = big impact (crop, contrast, color)
- Keep it simple and consistent—professional doesn’t mean overdone.
